Laser printers vs. inkjet printers: Which printer should you choose?

Printer Type Comparison:

Inkjet printers are generally cheaper, smaller, and more versatile, capable of printing both text documents and high-quality images, especially photos. However, be wary of cheap inkjet printers, as they can ultimately cost you dearly.

On the other hand, laser printers may have a higher initial investment and more expensive ink cartridges, but overall, they offer lower cost per page, faster printing speeds, and generally lower total cost of ownership.

Let's take a closer look at the advantages and disadvantages of laser and inkjet printers so you can make a more confident purchase next time.

What do you plan to use the printer for?

If you only want to print documents occasionally, most people would recommend an inkjet printer. However, a common problem with inkjet printers is that the ink dries out if not used frequently. Therefore, if your budget allows, I strongly recommend a reasonably priced laser printer; laser printers use toner that doesn't dry out.

But if you need to print small amounts of documents and color images regularly, an inkjet printer is sufficient. Laser printers are known for their greater durability and can print large volumes of black and white and color documents frequently. While laser printers were originally designed for office use, their affordability has made them increasingly popular with home users.

What about color printing? Color laser printers are suitable for everyday color printing, but if you need to print professional, high-resolution photos, an inkjet printer is the better choice.

High-quality inkjet printers are specially designed to produce the vivid, detailed, richly toned, and deeper blacks that photographers and creatives crave. Many professional inkjet printers use pigment inks, which are more fade-resistant and suitable for a variety of art paper types and sizes. If you don't need the durability of pigment inks, you can also choose a dye-based inkjet printer.

Inkjet Printers vs. Color Laser Printers – One of the most common questions we receive from buyers is: Should I buy a color laser printer or an inkjet printer? Ultimately, it depends on what you need to print in color.

If you need gallery-quality photos, choose an inkjet printer.

However, if you need to print medium-quality color images and do not require high color depth and tonal range, we recommend choosing a color laser printer over an inkjet printer for two reasons: Laser printer toner does not dry out as easily as inkjet printer toner after prolonged periods of inactivity; and laser printer toner cartridges print more pages than inkjet printer toner cartridges.
