Black dots, shadows, or ghosting appear in print? 7 common issues and solutions.

Suddenly having black dots, shadows, or ghosting in your printouts not only affects the appearance of the document but can also make you wonder, "Is the toner cartridge broken?" Don't rush to replace the printer; most problems can actually be easily troubleshooted and resolved by yourself.

First, take a quick look: A quick self-check checklist

If you happen to have a problematic sheet of paper in your hand, you can check the following simple indicators:

✅ Black dots are always in roughly the same position → Most likely a problem with the photosensitive drum surface

✅ The entire page is hazy with many small black dots → Possibly due to toner leakage/poor toner condition

✅ Text is blurred or ghosted → Mostly related to the fuser or fuser temperature

✅ There are always black edges/shadows → Possibly due to dirt on the internal rollers or paper path

✅ It only started getting dirty after prolonged use → The waste toner container may be nearly full

✅ The paper is soft, curved, and looks damp → Mostly due to paper or ambient humidity issues

✅ The problem occurred immediately after replacing the toner cartridge → First check if the installation/model is compatible

Below, we will break down each point and teach you how to handle it step by step.

Scenario 1: Black dots remain in the same position

Most likely a problem with the photosensitive drum surface

Characteristics:

Black dots appear in similar positions on every page

Or they "repeate" at the same intervals

Possible causes:

Dust or oil contamination on the photosensitive drum surface

Small scratches or dents on the drum surface

What you can do:

  1. Turn off the power and remove the drum unit.
Let the machine cool down slightly before gently removing the drum unit, avoiding direct sunlight on the drum surface.
  2. Visually inspect the drum surface.
Check the green/blue drum surface for obvious scratches, dents, or dirt.    👉 Note: Do not touch the drum surface directly with your hands.
  3. Gently shake the drum unit.
Gently shake it horizontally from side to side a few times to loosen the toner.
  4. Reinstall the drum unit and print 2-3 pages as a test.
If the black dots are still in the same position, it is highly likely that the drum surface is damaged, and it is recommended to replace the drum unit.

Scenario 2: Numerous small black dots and a gray background across the entire page

This may be due to toner leakage or a toner quality issue.

Characteristics:

Many tiny black dots in the white areas

The entire page appears grayish and lacks a clean black finish.

Possible Causes:

The toner cartridge is not properly sealed, resulting in slight toner leakage.

The toner particles are in poor condition or contain impurities.

The cartridge was subjected to impact or violent shaking during transportation.

Solution Steps:

  1. Check the area around the toner cartridge casing.
Remove the toner cartridge and check for any noticeable toner spillage around it.  Check the inside of the packaging for any spilled toner.
  2. Gently shake the cartridge and try printing again.
Reinstall the toner cartridge and print a few pages to see if the problem improves.
  3. If possible, try a different toner cartridge.
Test with a new ASTA toner cartridge:  If the problem disappears → The original toner cartridge itself is faulty.    If the problem persists → Further investigation is needed (e.g., environment, machine).
  4. Contact the seller/after-sales service.
If a newly purchased toner cartridge has significant toner leakage, it is recommended to take photos and contact customer service for assistance.

Scenario 3: Text or Images Show "Ghosting" or "Ghosting"

Mostly related to the fuser or fuser temperature

Characteristics:

The same line of text appears as a "shadow."

The entire text appears to be dragged.

The printed content is easily blurred by hand.

Possible Causes:

Insufficient fuser temperature or uneven pressure.

Toner type incompatible with printer.

Paper too thick or damp, affecting fuser.

Solution Steps:

  1. First, replace with a pack of normal plain A4 paper.
Use standard 70–80 g/m² copy paper and ensure the paper is dry and flat.
  2. Check print settings.
In the computer print interface, select the correct paper type (plain paper/thick paper, etc.).
Some models allow switching to "high fuser mode," which you can try adjusting.
  3. Cross-test with a different toner cartridge.
Install a new ASTA-compatible toner cartridge and try printing. If the problem persists after replacing the toner cartridge, it's most likely due to aging or malfunction of the printer's fuser assembly.
  4. Contact a professional repair service. The fuser unit is an internal part of the machine, and it is not recommended to disassemble it yourself. It is recommended to find a professional repair service or the brand's after-sales service.

Scenario 4: Black edges or shadows on the paper

Possibly due to dirt on the internal rollers or paper path

Characteristics:

Black stripes or edges are consistently present on one or both sides of the printed paper.

The middle area is relatively normal.

Possible Causes:

The transfer roller or charging roller is contaminated with toner or paper scraps.

A large amount of old toner remains in the paper path and has not been cleaned in time.

Solution Steps:

  1. Lightly clean the inside of the machine.
Open the front cover, being careful not to touch hot parts.
Use a dry, soft, lint-free cloth to gently wipe away visible paper scraps and dust.
Do not use a damp cloth or paper towels with alcohol.
  2. Check both sides of the drum unit.
Check for broken plastic sheets, damaged scraper blades, etc.
  3. Use the printer's built-in "cleaning mode" (if available). Many printers have a "clean drum/clean transfer roller" function in their menu; perform this once.

Scenario 5: The toner cartridge gets increasingly dirty after prolonged use.

This may be due to the waste toner cartridge being nearly full.

Characteristics:

The cartridge is clean when first used, but becomes increasingly gray after printing for a while.

Changing paper or reloading only provides temporary relief.

Possible Causes:

The waste toner cartridge or waste toner channel is nearly full or blocked.

The toner cartridge is nearing or has exceeded its rated lifespan.

Solution Steps:

  1. Confirm the toner cartridge's usage time.
Refer to the instruction manual or order page to check the approximate page count for your toner cartridge model.
  2. If the waste toner cartridge has a removable compartment (for some models), strictly follow the instructions to gently empty the waste toner from the waste bag (be careful not to suck it in).
  3. Replace with a new toner cartridge.
If the usage is already high, it is recommended to replace it with a new ASTA-compatible toner cartridge. Print quality will generally improve significantly.

Situation 6: Wrinkled Paper, Feels Damp

"Shadows and Dirty Prints" Caused by Environment and Paper

Characteristics:

Paper becomes soft, has wavy edges or slight wrinkles

Paper feels damp to the touch

Large areas of unclean printing

Possible Causes:

Paper is damp

The humidity in the printer's environment is too high

Paper weight is incompatible with the machine

Solution Steps:

  1. Test with a new pack of paper.
Using freshly opened paper will usually result in significantly better print quality.
  2. Check the machine's placement.
Avoid placing it near windows, on the ground, near air conditioner vents, water dispensers, or other damp locations.
  3. Store paper and toner cartridges.
Return unused paper to its packaging and seal it tightly; keep the toner cartridge away from moisture and direct sunlight.

Scenario 7: Problems Occur Immediately After Toner Cartridge Replacement

First, check the model and installation.

Symptoms:

Black dots, error messages, or abnormalities appear immediately after replacing the toner cartridge.

A gentle reinstallation works for a page or two, then instability returns.

Possible Causes:

Toner cartridge model is not fully compatible with the printer.

Toner cartridge not fully inserted.

Transportation protective clips and seals not completely removed.

Solution Steps:

  1. Reconfirm model compatibility. Check the model number on the printer's nameplate to ensure you purchased an ASTA-compatible toner cartridge.
  2. Reinstall as instructed.
Remove all protective seals and covers.
Push in the toner cartridge until you hear a "click" sound indicating it's locked in place.
Close the front cover and wait for the machine to initialize.
  3. Restart the printer. Turn the printer off and on again, then print a test page to confirm the effect.

If you have tried the above methods and the problem persists, please feel free to contact ASTA customer service. We will provide a more accurate solution based on your print sample and device model.
